Tips for Deer Hunting Public Land

Every once in a while it is nice to revisit some of our older stories as their value never really diminishes with time. Come Saturday, many of you shotgunner's will take to the field after deer. Many of you will have access to private land but many of you will be out on some of Iowa's public hunting areas. Regardless of which group you fall in, hunting public land can be really productive. This is an article I ran a couple of years ago about my experience hunting the second season. Second season action is challenging because nearly all the deer have been trained to avoid people because of their exposure to the first season hunters. We'd be interested to hear success some of you have had during the shotgun seasons on public land!

I hunt around the centerville area every year since Ive been drawn as a non resident and have killed many respectible bucks. On average the bigger bucks are probably going to be on private lands but you can kill a big one on public land just the same. It just wont be as easy. Good hunting! W.H.
