August Roadside Counts Are In

DNR Roadside Report 2005

The August Roadside Counts in Iowa have been completed and the report posted to the Iowa DNR website. Statewide pheasant numbers are 19% above 2004 counts and even with the ten-year average. Pheasant populations were similar or higher than 2004 in all regions, except the SC regions. Counts in the NC, WC and C regions are all significantly higher than those reported in 2004. Populations in NW, NE and SW regions were higher than those reported in 2004 but not consistently so. Counts in the drought stricken EC and SE regions were unchanged from 2004.

This year's counts reflect generally favorable weather conditions Iowa experienced this past winter and spring, with a few exceptions where drought conditions or locally heavy rains impacted reproduction.

Hunters should generally expect good bird numbers this fall, but the hunting will not be consistent statewide. Be sure to download and CAREFULLY EXAMINE the full PDF report, as it should answer your questions regarding where the birds are most abundant and where locally heavy rains occurred this spring. The report is 514kb so be patient while downloading the PDF file.

This year we had 1,591 individuals sign up for this notification service. I'm sorry I cannot direct you to specific management areas that are better than others. For help locating public hunting areas we strongly recommend the Iowa Sportsman's Atlas (see Frequently Asked Questions page below). This atlas of public lands is what we all carry in our vehicles and is invaluable for getting around in Iowa.

Also, anarticle of solid blaze orange clothing must be worn while hunting upland birds in Iowa.

I may contact you again via e-mail at the end of the season to see if you hunted in Iowa this year and to see how you did. Have an enjoyable hunt this fall.
