Minimum Hunting Age

I heard on the radio the other day that the Humane Society of the United States is talking with Maryland state legislators about establishing a minimum hunting age of perhaps 16.

I found this article about it from the Associated Press on Yahoo News. It explains how a five-year old who shot a deer last year, and a eight-year old who shot a bear last month have brought the minimum hunting age in Maryland into question.

The article says a state wildlife manager disagrees with a proposed minimum hunting age. He maintains children of any age who have passed the state's tests for firearm competency and hunter safety should be allowed to hunt. Similar to here in Iowa, where residents born after Jan. 1, 1972, and nonresidents born after Jan. 1, 1967, must satisfactorily complete a hunter education course in order to obtain a hunting license, the article reports the competency and safety test has been a requirement for all new Maryland hunters since 1977.

Toward the end, the article seems to contradict itself when it says Maryland has no adult supervision requirement for junior hunters, defined by the state as those under 16, but then goes on to report on Maryland's Junior Deer Hunt, a one-day event for hunters 16 and under that requires adult accompaniment. Huh?

At any rate it, is an interesting topic and perhaps worthy of awareness/discussion here in Iowa where, regulations in the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Hunter Education Program state: A person who is 11 years-old or older may enroll in a course, but those who are 11 and successfully complete the course shall be issued a certificate of completion which becomes valid on that person

Minimum Hunting Age

I certainly think the younger they learn the safety issues AND get out to hunt that the easier it might be to get a youngster interested in hunting and other outdoor pursuits. PARENTS, responsible parents, should be the key and be allowed to take their kids when they think they are ready. I don't like a minimum hunting age, however I do think parents need to make rational informed decisions on when to get their kids out in the field. A three year old is too young to hunt, but not to learn safety. Then again, some ten year olds might be too young in some situations. Takes a a lot of good parenting in my opinion and should start there.
