Tenkara Trout Trifecta by Craig Thor

Well after a week of terrible weather and temperatures I jumped at the fact is was a whopping 14 degrees out today. Ventured out to Spring Branch Creek as this stream never freezes and is a great place to get some good practice casting in. We only spent about an hour and a half there and I pulled off a trout trifecta with a Brown, Rainbow and Brook Trout all from the same stream all in about 100 yards of each other

Though the day started off slow it was great to get out to do some casting and gave me a chance to practice casting and try out some 7x tippet with a size 16 Sakasa Kebari. As I practice I'm finding the pluses to using 2 tippet sizes. I've been using 6x for size 12 and up and now will use 7x for size 14 and 16. The only downside to the 7x is the tree is much more likely to eat the fly compared the the 6x. After about half and hour or so I landed my first Brown a small guy at only 6" but a fish none the less on a cold winter day. I kept fishing and about 10 minutes later I at another pool I landed an 8" Brown after spending a few minutes coaxing him into taking the fly. I walked back downstream to where I had seen several trout hanging out in a bend and got the interest of a 10" Rainbow who couldn't resist the size 14 Kebari. As I was starting to see my hands freeze over I wanted to hit one last spot further down stream so I trekked down and waded across the stream. After a short walk up to a quick deep run I made a couple of casts with the second one the fly seemed to stop mid drift and a slight lift the fight was one. This one completed the trifecta with a beautiful 6-7" Brookie coming to the net. A few more casts and I decided to make my way back to the car to head back home. Was a great chance to get some fresh air, some great casting practice, and do something that doesn't happen every day on this stream, actually this is a first for me. A few pictures of the stream though none of the fish I was more concerned with quickly unhooking and returning these guys back to the water they came out of.
