Hello every body! I recently moved to Pottawattamie county Iowa and was happy to find a hunting and fishing forum like this. Very informational and everyone seems to want to help. With that in mind I was hoping if any one would like to help me find some fishing holes. I'm looking for some good size blue gills. Can anyone help me find some with in a half hour of Walnut. I've tried Prarie Rose and have had no luck.

Also I love fishing river spillways. Are there any closer to me than those in Des Moines? Two last questions, is the Sailorville spillway open to the public and if it is, is it worth trying for walleye.

Thank you in advance to all that are willing to help.

Welcome to the site Jason!

Yes, the spillway below Sailorville is open to the public and yes, nice eyes are caught from there.

Sorry, but can't help you with the other questions!

Jason, welcome to Iowa, and IA Outdoors! Tomhusker, GSMITH, and Wildman from the site are not too far from you, they should be able to hook you up on some good spots in your area. Blackhawk Lake is to your north(Lake View), and I believe produces some nice fish. You also have the Nishnabotna River close by. I know they catch a lot of cats there, but am unsure what else. DeSoto Bend by Missouri Valley to your west. And of course the Mighty MO River!

Saylorville spillway is open to the public, and yes, they do catch a fair amount of walleye there. I'm sure someone will give you better info, but those are just a few spots I'm aware of. Good Luck!

Hello and welcome to Iowa. I grew up in Atlantic in Cass County right next door to you. The Nishnabotna river is a good nearby fishing hole. Cold Springs just south of Lewis, Iowa is good for cats, crappie and bluegill. It is however small. There are lots of good farm ponds. What follows is a listing most of Southwest Iowa fishing spots and the counties they are in. All of them have bluegill and crappie, some walleye, channel cat and others too. Again, Welcome, and have fun!

Twelve Mile (Union)

Green Valley (Union)

Icaria (Adams)

Little River (Decatur)

Big Creek (Polk)

Lake Ahquabi (Warren)

Hooper Lake (Warren)

Don Williams (Boone)

Hickory Grove (Story)

Rock Creek Lake (Jasper)

Farm ponds: bass, bluegill, crappie

Viking (Montgomery)

Greenfield (Adair)

Mormon Trail (Adair)

Willow Lake (Harrison)

Farm Creek Lake (Montgomery)

Anderson Area North Pond (Montgomery)

Thanks to every one for the warm welcome and all the great info. I think I will try the sailorville spillway tomorrow.

I was also wondering if there are any flatheads in the nishnabotna? If there are I know what I'm doing every night of the week.

Thanks again for the info.

Hey Bob, How'd you leave Three Mile off your list? Any particular reason? I've never fished 3/12/Union... but I've hunted 3/12... three looks like a good fishin' hole... just wondering...

The Nishnabotna is one of the best catfish rivers in the state. Big flatheads and blues can be caught out of it.

Welcome to IOWA OUTDOORS! As you can tell there is always someone to help you with any questions you may have. I live about 13 miles south of Atlantic and have been here for 5 years. I think bigjake pretty much covered all the bases for fishing holes in the are, some of them I haven't even heard of yet. You can get a DNR guide that has the locations of all of these places so you can mark them on a map.

You didn't say where you came from. Also, when you get a minute, fill out you profile so we can all get to know you better.

Heck Griff, I don't know why I left three mile off. Maybe because it wasn't on the list of lakes I copied and pasted from the site I got the info from? Icaria, Prairie Rose, the Nishnabotna, Viking, and Lake Anita are the places I fished growing up, but I knew there were others. No particular reason, but yes add Three Mile to the list.

Thanks for all the info. Due to high winds I decided to try the Nishnabotna on sunday. Fished a couple of outside bends in heavy cover. All I caught were two creek chubs and a sucker. Oh well now I know where to go for bait!

TomHusker, I was born and raised in eastern Nebraska. Last year I got bored so I moved to Pennsylvania. My outlook on life did not mesh with theirs so I moved back to the heartland. I have family in Walnut, that is why I am here. Well, for now any way.
