I have deer hunted now for over 30 years. I do not have hunters safety, I intend on doing so soon, but until then well you know. I have never been close to having an accident because I practice very sound practices, I also generally hunt alone and if I do take somone along I make sure he is a very smart and ethical hunter.

NOT everyone should be allowed to be in the woods, including some of the people who pass hunters safety. Come on we've all seen them. Exactly the reason I hunt alone, just a general observation but it seems to me the guys who really love to hunt and are very good at it are more solitary just like the big ole bucks their after.

It's true that you can buy a license without the card. I too know of a person who bought a license without ever taking the course (someone who's birthdate dictated that he should have to take the course). I believe the law also states that you must carry the card with you when you are hunting (not just when you buy the license). I've heard of one person who had to hand over some ducks he shot because he was not carrying his card when a DNR officer asked him to produce it (although he did have his license, etc). Like so many other things, I believe it depends on which DNR officer stops you and what mood he is in.

One point that almost everyone is missing is that the course is called hunter education, not hunter safety. I have been a hunter ed instructor for more than twenty years and our county's chief instructor for seven. I feel that safety is THE primary goal of the course, but not the only goal. In the old days a persons number was a combination of their initials and birthdate, but not any more. Cards are not mailed to a student from Des Moines anymore, they are handed out at the completion of the course. Students must not only pass a written test, but a practical gun handling test as well. I have failed students before because of their firearm handling ability, and have been completely backed by my DNR officer. I don't want my name on a card of someone that proves in front of us that they are unsafe. If people are worried about the situation they can contact me or their DNR officer and get certified as an instructor and help out. All of my instructors are volunteers and I couldn't do my job without them. Sorry this is so long.

Pissonpeta: you brought up the 10 year old kid hunting accident again. I'm assuming that you are referring to the kid who was supposedly shot while deer hunting with his father. Didn't we show that it was a falsehood? Tell me what incident you are referring to.
