dtdg 01,
I know we are driving on the lake to our sleeper. It sounds like there are well plow ice roads alot of places up there, but you have to pay to use them if you're not fishing out of the resorts access. I've read where you can usually rent vexilars form different resorts and most supply "rattle wheels" for fishing. But I think those are better for when you fall asleep and still want your minnow wet. I guess I will know more when I get back Monday. I'll post a report.

We drove our car out.I would say a sleeper is the way to go.They have streets signs and everything up there on the ice cant get lost.We used fathead minnows under a bobber not as much action on those as frozen shiners.Advice only use one rattle wheel at night we put down three and had a eelpout on one and tangled all three lines up.Bring an extra light source we only had 1 propane light in our house not quite bright enough.

I wanted to report we had a good time. Got up there Friday morning and caught a fair share of fish that day. Saturday was really slow, but a front came thru. We caught just enough to have a fish fry Saturday.

http://www.965ksom.com/index.php The local radio station, miller light, and several area businesses sponsers a trip there every year. They are there now and post pics on the website, just look for 2009 fishing trip in the photo section.

I was on that trip. We got back Thursday. The bite was a little slow as a cold front came through the day that we got there (the same storm that shutdown I35 from Ames to the MN border on Monday). There were six of us in our group. We ended up with 87 keeper walleyes/saugers and one nice perch (ate fish a couple of nights for supper and brought our limit home with us). We had a couple 10 lb eel pouts and a few tullibee as well. The walleyes/saugers we got into were just good eater size - nothing really big. I think our biggest was about 18 inches (most were 12" or so and threw back a lot of smaller ones). Before the cold snap, they had been hammering them and the sizes were much better. We had about the same luck last year as well. Two years ago however, we had our limit every day and weren't keeping anything under 16". I think that year spoiled us a bit. That year though, we were out about 29 miles (from Wheelers Point - Ballard's resort). This year was about 12 miles. Last year was about 9. That 29 mile trip out sucked as it took a couple hours but the fishing was much better.

Here are some of the pics from the past few years:
