So I must have dyslexic fishing abilities. I read up on walleye fishing and those Gulp Alive minnows and thought I'd give them a shot. My brother, nephew and I headed out to the Saylorville dam to the DSM river first but it was closed last weekend so we tried the dam from Big Creek to Saylorville.

Using the Gulp Alive minnows and casting into the dam my brother hooked about 7 fat kitties. I wasn't skunked but I only caught 1 striper. My nephew even out-fished me with about 10 small stripers using a worm and bobber. We didn't catch a single walleye either.

I still wouldn't trade the experience for anything, and I thought you guys might enjoy the photos! Sorry but they were taken with a camera phone.

Next time I'm bringing a spare bag to pick up some trash - that place was horribly littered! Frown

This guy looks skinny!

Nice job on the fall cats! Looks like a blast, I love the pic of the little guy holding that big ol' cat.
Cool

Good job on the fish. The best time to find a walleye or 2 down there is real early in the spring when the ice is just going out. It is tough for eyes there. There needs to be heavey waterflow early to draw them in. The best year for eyes I saw down there was spring 2001 after record snowfall over the winter. Lots of water moving early.

both of these fish came frome the spillway and you can see 4-10 and 3-29 for dates on the photos. A lot more fish came out of there that spring up to almost 10lbs that I know of.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

MapQuest the Kum n Go in Polk City. Go N until you see the steepled church on the left and go W on the road in front of the church.

It's better to have it and not need it; then it is to need it and not have it.

If you're looking for the Big Creek spillway it's NE of the dam.

I usually go to the other side because that road is rutted out if you don't have a truck. The other way is to continue on down the road past Kum & Goand over the bridge just past the Big Creek par enterance. Take the first left after the bridge. At the 'T', turn left again and follow that road all the way and you'll be at the top of the spillway. The only thing with this route is there's a big hill to climb down first.
